Vocaloids

There are natural born singers, being able to produce perfect pitch through their own vocal abilities, unaided with technology. And then there are manufactured/artificial singers aided with technology to enhance their vocals to give it that unique edge.
Vocaloid, a singing voice synthesizer, is a software which allows a person to produce a synthesized vocal by typing in lyrics and a melody to a pre-recorded vocal. This software is able to change the dynamics and tone of voice as well as add various effects such as adding vibrato.

However with this concept of a "virtual singer", can music produced by Vocaloids be considered real music? I believe that Vocaloids can be put in the music category as there is a person who has to ultimately write the lyrics and alter the way the Vocaloid sounds to achieve what they want, much like there is a person who writes lyrics and a singer who sings.

One of the big breakthroughs for Vocaloids was the launch of Hatsune Miku, in Japan. Once people started to use the software, and other language versions came out, it popularised it even further. A quote from Hatsune Miku's producer perfectly shows how much potential it has. Wataru Sasaki says "It's a very organic project and it grows through the internet. Once her songs are in the users hands, it's not for us to control. It's the users that make the music and once its theirs, it's theirs. That's what Hatsune Miku is; it's not just the person, or the animation, but it's about the internet community and their creativeness."

Giving people, amateur company's and even professionals the chance to expand their knowledge and show some creativeness with such a product to produce music that has never been heard before. Music is an art, and Vocaloid is just another way to represent a musician's art.
