Mando-pop music, also called Mandarin pop music, is a type
of pop music that popular among Mandarin speaking areas such as Mainland of
China, Republic of China (Taiwan), Malaysia and also have great influences in
South Korea and Japan.
This musical genre was first introduced in the 1920s and has gone
through many transformations due to the political unrest within Asian countries. This type
of music was at its peak during 1930s-1940s, in the Seven Great Singing Stars
era and then declined when the communist party in mainland China
usurped the power and denounced pop music as pornography. Until the 1970s, Mando-pop
rose to the top again in Taiwan and became the mainstream popular music genre among Mandarin speaking countries until now.
When speaking of modern Mando-pop music, there is one person who immediately comes to mind; my personal favourite singer Jay Chou, the Chinese Pop King of the 21st Century. This guy’s music contains a wide range of musical
types such as Pop, Rock, R&B and Hip-Hop. Additionally, he also combines Chinese
cultural elements in his music which made his pop-songs beautiful as poetry. Thanks to Jay Chou
and his music, which made defined the divide between Mando-pop and other popular music and leads a ‘China Wind’ in Asian music history. Jay’s
contributions to the music industry brings Mando-pop to the worldwide musical stage and even
attracts many western fans from countries such as America and Australia.
